SB 489 eliminates all “sanctuary” protections for undocumented individuals. This includes empowering federal immigration officers to make arrests without local law enforcement coordination or warrants. It also halts all government funding directed towards undocumented populations.
Context: This bill would end programs like Soon-to-be-Sooners, Oklahoma’s CHIP-funded initiative that provides limited pregnancy-related care to ensure the baby’s health. Since CHIP does not require citizenship, many undocumented women rely on this program. SB 489 would eliminate this coverage.
